Demonstrations erupted in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya on June 14th, 2016, sparking violent protests after Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) party leaders Junet Mohammed and Johnson Muthama were apprehended. While the leaders were reportedly arrested over allegations of hate speech, angry protesters accused police of specifically targeting CORD leaders; but Jubilee party MPs Moses Kuria and Kimani Ngunjiri are reportedly also among those wanted for spreading hate speech and “assassination remarks”. Police dispersed the crowd of angry protesters by lobbing teargas, water cannons and firing rubber bullets.
